NOTES:

FEDERAL: The sign "FEDERAL is almost the same as the sign as GOVERNMENT, except for FEDERAL you use an "F" handshape.

CLOSE-[shut]: The general sign for "CLOSE" (that sounds like "kloze") is almost the same as the sign for "CLOSE-DOOR" except that in CLOSE-[shut] both hands do the shutting motion.

ALLERGIC:  For the sign "ALLERGIC," start with the dominant hand index finger near the tip of your nose (pointing at the nose) then do the sign for OPPOSITE.  Quite a few Deaf signers drop the "nose" part of the sign.

COST:  The sign "COST-[worth/value] is a variation of the sign IMPORTANT. COST-[worth/value] taps two "F" hands together twice at the tips of the thumbs and index fingers. (Which happens to be the ending position of the sign "important.")  This can be used to ask:  "What is that worth?" or "What is the cost of?"  The main sign for COST-[fee] (the one done with an "X" hand) is used to mean things like: cost, fee, fine, tax, and price.

Age of graduation:  Certain students with disabilities (including Deaf students) have a legal right to remain in the public school system until the age of 21. Thus it is common for a Deaf student to graduate at age 21.

Signaling Devices: Lights, vibrators, or other devices that alert or inform a Deaf person of events, situations, or changes in the environment.  For example: "A door light."  When someone presses on a button next to the door outside, a light flashes inside to let the Deaf individual know that someone is at the door.  Another example: When it is time to wake up, a vibrator under the mattress can be used as type of "alarm clock."

Cochlear Implants
: Devices implanted into the head to provide an electronic semblance of "hearing."

[1h]: If you see "1h" in ASL gloss it typically  means "do this sign using only one hand." If you see "lh" (the letter "L" follow and the letter "H") it means "left hand." If you see "rh" it generally means "right hand."  (Yes, I'm sure you had it figured out by the time I got to "rh" that "rh" means "right hand" and you didn't need me to tell you.)
