NOTES:
TEAM: The sign "TEAM" is the same as "CLASS" except it uses a "T" handshape instead of a "C" handshape.
"WH-question": Generally we put "WH-questions" at the end of ASL sentences.
In the case of "How many players are there on a soccer team?"" we could
sign: SOCCER TEAM, NUMBER PLAYER HOW-MANY? or SOCCER TEAM PLAYER ALTOGETHER
HOW-MANY? A shorter method would be to sign: SOCCER TEAM, HOW-MANY
PLAYER? In that last version, "how many players" becomes a "WH"-clause.
By that I mean ", you lower your eyebrows starting at "HOW-MANY" and hold
the eyebrows through the sign "PLAYER" as you end your sentence.
NAD LAC: The National Association of the Deaf Law and Advocacy Center
educates, advocates, and litigates on behalf of and to empower Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing people. The LAC advocates on legislative and public policy issues
of concern to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Community, particularly at the
national level and often in collaboration with other national
organizations." (Source: www.nad.org)
Your-SELF: The sign "your-SELF" often functions to mean "your own."
Thus if you were asking someone if they had "their own" hearing aid you
could use "your-SELF" to do so. You may wonder why someone would use a "your
own" statement or question instead of simply signing "you?" The
assumption of a "your own" sentence is that "someone" in the conversation
already has something and the question or comment is seeking to find out if
someone else would also like to have that thing.
Compare:
"Do you wish you had a hearing aid?" (Is a simple question that implies
nothing about whether or not I own a hearing aid.)
"Do you wish you had your own hearing aid?" (Likely indicates that I have a
hearing aid and you might be wishing you had one too.)
